At the age of 9, he knew he wanted to be a priest. On May 29, 1971 Father Tom Hartman was ordained into the priesthood. He became an associate pastor at St. James Church in Seaford and was known for his exuberance, love of people and deep spirituality. |

In the course of eight years, he developed AA programs, summer youth programs, marriage encounter programs and he performed thousands of Baptisms and Weddings and hundreds of Funerals. While at St. James he completed a doctorate of ministry degree at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California. He also became active in media and appeared on television and hosted several radio shows. |

In 1979, Bishop John McGann assigned him to direct a TV Studio named Telecare. Later that year he worked as a commentator at WPIX / Channel 11 during Pope John Paul II’s visit to New York. He won his first Emmy for this work. |

Father Tom developed the TV Channel to be a Spiritual home for many on Long Island. This new ministry introduced Father Tom to the Business Community, Parishes, and Charities. He believed that the church must think globally and build bridges to different religions and cultures. |
Father Tom raised six million dollars to build Christa House, a hospice for terminally ill AIDS patients in West Babylon, after his brother Gerard died of AIDS. |

Father Tom sat on the Boards of Christa House, Island Harvest, The Center for Disabilities, Long Island University, Harry Chapin Foundation, and New York Community Bank. |

He also served as Chaplain for the Nassau County Police Department and the New York Jets, and ministers to the Long Island Business Community. |
