Parkinson’s Disease Facts
Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Inc. is dedicated to a single purpose: To raise funds to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
- Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder typically progressing from mild tremors to complete physical incapacitation.
- Parkinson’s is the 2nd most common neurodegenerative disease, affecting approximately 1.5 million Americans (with 60,000 new cases annually).
- The Foundation seeks to provide funding for the newest, most innovative, highest caliber of scientific projects, which offer the best hope for the advancement and development of a cure.
- There is 80% loss of dopamine cells (messenger cells) in the mid-brain of Parkinson’s patients, resulting in misfired messages causing muscle movement to be shaky, balance to be impaired and movements rigid.
- Current treatments mask Parkinson’s symptoms but do not stop the disease’s progression.
